This Woman's day...

the world is all geared up to celebrate another overrated-media-hyped 'Women's day', I cant help but smirk at the corporate drama and the number of offers introduced for this one day.

All the clubs in town are offering free drinks for women. Big Cinemas is letting women watch movies free of cost.Jet airways has promised a 10% discount during the entire month of March for lady travelers and is giving 500 additional miles to all the female Jet privilege members for travel between the 5th and the 15th. If I were in Jaipur, I could use the public transportation free of cost for all my travel during the day. Whoever the marketing strategist is behind these dumb ideas, take my word, you ain't worth my two cents. This day or any day, I can buy my own drink and pay for the movies that I want to watch.

And, the number of award functions and shows shouting ' aaj ke naari ke liye', 'we salute the gr8 women' and the likes; endless!! Blame it on my dumb dna or whatever, I can't fathom how showing off skin on the silver screen and dancing to raunchy numbers make a woman worthy of making it to the list of 'gr8 woman'?? suck it up, you corporate leeches, for I know that all this is a game for brand publicity and TRPs and you really don't care if there is a woman dying out there right in front of your headquarters!!

I really don't care about the bill for 33% reservation in LokSabha . I don't care if they increase the quota for women in engineering and medical colleges and neither do I care if it is is extended to the IITs and IIMs. I don't care for special buses, special screenings and neither do I fancy separate flights. All I wanted this day was just one promise; that of a right to co-exist peacefully..with respect..with safety..with freedom...with dignity...without a fear of being shamed, trampled, abused and humiliated..without being looked upon as objects of pleasure...

which none of you promised...

Dear God,

I stand before you and ask you to give me and all the women on earth the strength to fight for what is right..the strength to kick in the arse of those people who take us for granted..the strength to stand against the atrocities committed against us in the name of god/family/honor/caste/creed/religion/ritual/ and...

Let there be no more female foeticides and infanticides in India
Let there be no other Ruchikas and Aradhanas fighting for justice anywhere in the world
Let there not be another bride burning, dowry death and honor killing in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and elsewhere
Let there not be another victim of acid attacks
Let there be no other young girl subjected to the brutal breast-ironing practice in West Africa
Let there be no more virgins sacrificed as sex-slaves in Ghana and genital mutilation of girl-child in Africa
Let the story of one more mother forced into prostitution be unheard of...

God actually is blind like the lady in the court :)
Very well said... totally agree with you. Woman's day has totally become a fancy thing and the whole purpose of it's existence is sidelined.

It is one big grumpy article. What's the harm with some specials coming a women's way. Ask not what the country can do for you as what you can do for the country. Stop whining and start by appreciating the efforts of others trying to make a differenc

Dear Parth,

Thanks for the comment.

There is no harm in some specials coming a woman's way. I was whining abt the unnecessary publicity 'they' are hogging in the name of 'women's day'.What started out as an encouragement to women has taken the shape of a money making fancy today. And with women shouting on top of their voices claiming they are equal to men, do they need another day dedicated to them to celebrate their achievements?

Go back to my post and read it again.I have exalted the status of women by saying they can buy their own drinks and discounts or no discounts, they can still pay for their travel.I would appreciate the efforts of those trying to make a difference to the underprivileged in the country and in the world.Distributing free drinks and tickets makes a difference to who? You?

FYI, I have asked not questioned anywhere in my article what the country can do for me. It is ridiculous tto use a sentence just cos it sounded good to your ears.Think first.

Feel free to respond with your views. Have a great day!
